In 2017 the major Port Houses broke with tradtion and declared back to back Vintage Declarations in 2016/17. 
According to Neal Martin the last time they "semi-declared" back to back was in 1991/92, and before that you have to go all the way back to 1872/73. The reason was simply that the wines were just to stunning not to declare.
The vintages will no doubt be tasted, discussed and compared for decades to come, as they are clearly different in style. The "the leitmotifs of 2016 are elegance and finesse" according to Neal Martin at Vinous Media, whereas 2017 is more about structure and intensity". Martin continues: "The 2017s are more hedonistic than their 2016 counterparts and yet the startling aspect of these Ports is their freshness", and concludes that "Conjecturing what the 2017s will become, the mind boggles."
Only Dow matched Taylor's 98 point score, and only one - Quinta do Noval Nacional at $1000 per bottle - outscored it, but we'd say the Taylor's wins hands down for value!
