Other 95 pt-rated Sangiovese from 2012/2013… compare with Fonterutoli Siepi at $80… Petrolo Boggina for $65… at $25, this is a steal!

Talk about a fun tasting… I was trying to find some Tuscans in the $20+ range to feature. So I rounded up a dozen, ranging from $20-$60, and ratings from 92-95 pts. Then, I had my wife wrap them all in foil, and we proceeded to taste through the bunch.

After two rounds of tasting, the field narrowed considerably – to three bottles.

We then sat down to evaluate the wines the “right” way – with food! A ragu of lamb shank over fresh pappardelle pasta with some peas mixed in… gotta get my veggies!

Post-dinner, we tasted through them all again, without food. A most thorough assessment! Now, while the other two were delicious, and will be offered via email, this one clearly rose to the top. Foil was removed and – wow! This was not the $60 bottle. Or the $50. Or the $40…

I cannot say this with enough emphasis – this is simply the best $25 Tuscan bottle of wine I have had in a long time.

90% Sangiovese. 10% Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon from the heart of Tuscany. Stunning, especially with a little air – this baby, while delicious when we first popped it, only improved over the course of the evening. From first pour, the glass explodes with aromas of ripe cherries and berries, blended with spicy notes from the French oak aging. Make no mistake, this is a modern styling of Sangiovese, dripping with fruit, velvety tannins and spice. The lamb ragu, by the way, was a delicious pairing. You could go bigger and serve with red meat, or tone it down a bit with grilled pork. By generous with the fresh herbs, and you’ll really accentuate the fruit in the wine. Delish!

“Lots currants, blueberries, vanilla and floral character on the nose and palate. Full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Edgy contrast of acidity, ripe fruit and wood. Stylish, savory and delicious. A blend of sangiovese and merlot. One of the best values amongst Super Tuscan reds. “

I grabbed the last of what was available in North and South Carolina. Trust me, this is one to buy in as large a quantity as your budget will afford. Then, ignore the budget and buy a little more! Qualitatively similar Tuscans go for $65-80 and more…
