Luca Malbec is the #1 rated 2012 Argentine Malbec under $35 by all three publications! Simply, you cannot find a better Malbec for the money than this gem.
Year after year, we keep coming back to this Malbec as one of our favorites. No surprise considering Luca is owned by Laura Catena – yes, that Catena. Laura is the daughter of the legendary Nicholas Catena. With rising superstar Luis Reginato as the winemaker, the wines from Luca are some of the best Argentina has to offer!
It all starts in the vineyard, where Laura has used her connections to source some of the oldest vines in the region - on average, 46 year-old vines sitting at 3150 feet elevation. These old vines provide complex, concentrated juice that simply cannot be duplicated with young vines. And the high elevation and location in the Andes Mountains provide cool nights and a long growing season resulting in bright acidity to balance the lush fruit.
Power and finesse. That is the combination that only the greatest wines achieve, and what makes this wine truly compelling. There’s plenty of stuffing for aging, and it promises another 7-10 years of drinking pleasure. But I am inclined to say drink it now… well not right now, ‘cause you’re at work… but, you know what I mean…
