Hugl Weine is a Grüner Veltliner specialist from Weinviertel region of Austria (near Czech border) Fully 70% of their vineyards are planted with it. Theirs is a wonderful example, dry and with crisp acidity, and a long finish. The vine is a likely descendent of Savagin, which we know as Gewurztraminer. There are researchers who study the sources of aromatic and other compounds in wine, and they are constantly finding new stuff. So if you think you’ve noticed the flavor (but NOT the “burn”) of pepper in some wines, you may be interested to know that the responsible chemical compound is called rotundone. Although there’s significant levels of rotundone in some Syrah/shiraz wines, it is also found in many Grüner Veltliners. So, should you try this wine and find some of that peppery flavor, you should congratulate yourself for your perceptiveness. Otherwise, the wine is fruity-but-dry, full-bodied, and it has great balance. We like it with ocean and fresh-water fishes, some shellfish like shrimp and oysters, creamy to medium-firm cheeses, and many types of hors d’oeuvre. Note the oversize, 1.0 Liter bottle!
