In the mid-1800s, the intrepid Luis Cousiño decided to import Sauvignon Blanc cuttings from the Graves region of Bordeaux to his burgeoning new estate in the Maipo Valley of Chile. Accidentally included was a more full-flavored clonal variant of Sauvignon Blanc called Sauvignon Gris, which has adapted brilliantly to the Chilean terroir. The 2009 Cousiño-Macul Sauvignon Gris is as serendipitously delicious as it sounds, combining the zesty minerality of a good Sauvignon Blanc with the rich exotic notes of wildflowers and citrus-zest reminiscent of a Pinot Gris. It’s great with light meat poultry, and enchanting with buttery Chilean sea bass.
