Long before people got hip to the breadth of Tuscan wine, Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ruled wine lists in countless Spaghetti joints across America. With such a noble-sounding name, customers thought they were getting top-tier wine to go along with their baked ziti. Chances are some people even mistook Nobile as a description for high-end Montepulciano d'Abruzzo! When artisanal Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino made it into the mainstream, Vino Nobile was forced into near obscurity. Nevertheless, there's some wonderful Prugnolo Gentile (local Sangiovese) made less than 15 miles east of Montalcino. We've carried Corte alla Flora's Rosso di Montepulciano, Giuggiollo Rosso, and Giuggiollo Blanco in the past, and now we're pleased to feature their Vino Nobile di Montepulciano for the first time. At half the price of the most modest Brunello, it's about time we got reacquainted with other great DOCG in southern Tuscany.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2014 is a blend of Prugnolo Gentile (80%), Merlot (10%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) grown on 84 acres near the town of Cervognano. The wine is aged for nearly two years in Allier barriques and another year in bottle. This 3-liter double magnum supplies four regular bottles of age-worthy wine and comes in an impressive wooden box. We also carry Corte all Flora's 2010 Nobile in a magnum size, in a wooden box too, as well as 2013 in the regular 750ml bottle.
Flavor Profile: Fuller-bodied, dry. Ruby red color with bright floral aromas. The velvety palate shows raspberry, dried cherry, and blackberry structured by grainy tannins. Mint, vanilla, and plums on a spicy finish. Pair with pasta, roast game, and meats.
