The Wagram is a unique place, a bridge between the two very different microclimates of both eastern Austria and western Austria. To the east, near the Hungarian border, the warm air comes off the Pannonian plain and helps to ripen red grape varieties. From the west, the cool air comes off the foothills of the Alps and helps wine grapes retain bright, lively acidity. Warm days and cool nights, as you know, are the key to creating beautifully balanced wine, especially Pinot Noir.

The 2013 Wagram Pinot Noir is absolutely a steal! Beautifully ripe, with loads of pretty cherry fruit and a hint of cola spice, this is classic Pinot Noir that stands up to Pinot Noir from anywhere! There’s a hint of earthiness here too, which adds a surprising touch of Burgundian complexity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for sixteen months in a combination of steel, large oak barrels, and used barrique, which adds additional layers of complexity and polish. With an elegant, medium-weight palate, refined and silky tannins, and a long, mouthwatering finish, you’d be hard pressed to find a better value in Pinot Noir!I had the opportunity to taste this wine at the winery in January, alongside a number of older vintages, and also surprisingly, this develops beautifully in bottle. It’s a great candidate for short term cellaring and will drink well and even gain in complexity over the next four to five years.

Chances are, you’ve heard me opine about how much I love Tony’s wines before, and if so, you’ve probably heard me say this: Although his importer does not submit these to the American wine press for review, the Austrians figured out long ago that this is one of the best estates in the country, as evidenced by the fact that every Michelin-starred restaurant in the country pours these wines by the glass. As a matter of fact, Tony was just named the 2015 Austrian Winemaker of the Year by “Wirtshausführer Österreich” – Austria’s premier restaurant guide.

This is an awesome food wine, and will match up with loads of different meals. Roasted fowl and salmon come to mind, as does any earthy, mushroom-accented dish. Juicy enough to be enjoyable on its own without food, this takes nicely to being served with a slight chill on it as well. With the weather heating up, it certainly fits the bill for a great summertime red!
